With the holiday season just around the corner I decided it would be a good idea to write up a list of gift ideas for a Sewist. As makers, we don’t want the usual silver chain necklace with the first letter of our name dangling from it. We want tools! Very specific tools! So if you’re wondering what to give your maker friend or loved one check out my list below! OR if you want to give your partner a hint to what to gift you, then send them here!

Scissors:
A Maker’s scissors is like a knight’s sword. It should be well-balanced, sharp and an extension of our own arm. A good pair of scissor can make the work of a maker infinitely easier and more enjoyable. They are sure to be well loved and cherished.
All Purpose Fabric Scissors: Kai 9” Sheers are super sharp and high-quality. I love this scissors for cutting all kinds of fabrics. These are my go-to scissors.
Small Snips: Kai Embroidery Scissors and Snips. These are the best little scissors for small projects and thread snipping! They are super sharps and great to have on hand while you work.
Applique Duckbill Scissors: Fiskar Duckbill Scissors are the best specialty scissors for trimming down seam allowances without nicking your work by accident. I use these all the time especially in bra making!
Seam Ripper:
Seam ripping is never fun. So, do you self a favor and get yourself a nice big ergonomic seam ripper, ton at least make it easier on your hands! I use this Clover Ergonomic Seam Ripper and I love it!
Pattern Weights:
These Brass Bells are my favorite pattern weights. One pack comes with an assortment of sizes which I find handy for cutting out different things. I love that whenever I pick up and move them they ring.
Cutting Mat:
If you’re not using a cutting mat and rotary cutter yet, I highly recommend it; and the bigger the better! I love how big and colorful these ones are. They come in different colors and sizes
Rotary Cutters:
Olfa 45mm Rotary Cutter, 28mm Rotary Cutter, 18mm Rotary Cutter
I love using a rotary cutter for cutting out sewing projects, especially if the fabric I’m using is slippery. I use all three of these sizes depending on how small or delicate the project I'm cutting out is!
Buttonhole Guage:
Sewing or Buttonhole Guages are so handy for marking buttonhole placements on shirts or jackets.
Buttonhole Cutter:
This Buttonhole Cutter Set is one of my favorite little tools. No more accidentally cutting through your buttonholes!
Chalk Hemmer:
This Chalk Hemmer is a GAME CHANGER! I cannot recommend getting a chalk hemmer enough. All you have to do is adjust the height of the Chalk Hemmer to your desired hem length. Then you squeeze the rubber ball at the end of the tube to blow a line of chalk onto your garment. Do this several times around the hem of the garment and done! You will never worry about wonky hems again! It’s so easy to use, even your significant other or friend can’t fail to help you mark your hem.
Straight Rulers:
All makers need a good ruler. I like using a clear ruler, so I can see underneath. These two are great clear rulers!
A sturdy straight ruler in inches. This ruler has marks down to 1/16” for accuracy!
If you work in centimeters this is a great ruler. The green stripe on the one side indicates a 1.5cm (5/8") width, which is a a typical seam allowance. Very handy!
Curved Rulers:
This French + Hip Curve Bundle is so handy for drawing curves! They have a width of either 1/2”(12mm) or 5/8” (15mm) for adding seam allowance to your patterns quickly and accurately. So helpful!
Flexible Ruler:
Great for measuring curves. I use this mostly for bra making to make breast root traces.
Tracing Wheel:
If you’re just getting into pattern modification and pattern drafting, you’re definitely going to need a tracing wheel for transferring curves and lines from fabric to paper.
Loop Turner:
I use a Loop Turner for so many sewing projects especially in the summer when I sew strappy summer dresses. I like this one because I can turn really fine, thin straps with it.
Bias Binding Makers:
If you tend to finish a lot of your makes with bias binding, then you definitely need a Bias Binding Maker. It’s so fun to make your own bias binding, and it’s also a great way to use up scraps! This is a bundle of different sized binding makers for making different width binding.
Sewing Machine Needles:
Did you know you should change out your needle after every sewing project? Having the right size needle is essential for every sewing project. For yourself a favor and stock up! Schmetz is my go-to brand for sewing machine needles.
All these are great stocking stuffers for any Sewist! If you want to see a more extensive list of my favorite sewing tools you can check out my Amazon Storefront!
